Start of my blog – New Side Project

I’m not a web designer at all and that will probably show throughout the beginning of my journaling and building of this site which will act as both my portfolio and as my blog that will revolve mostly around my game development journey. I might squeeze in some posts about my streaming and content creation from time to time as well depending on what content I produce. Since I can give live analytic thoughts on the game that I play live on Twitch and would like to get into reviewing games with an analytical approach.

What else that started today was me and a fellow class mate decided to sit down together in a call on Discord and discuss about doing a small side project during the summer and onwards for us to do some small portfolio work. We kept our expectations low since we won’t be able to work fulltime on it. So instead of discussing about what type of game we want to make, we talked about what sort of mechanics we would like to work on. This I believe will be an easier approach to not accidentally over scope and start doing stuff that is not needed or wanted. Instead we will let the game evolve with what we decide to work on.

My class mate has been working on a character controller system revolving around a tool that can interact with objects in the world. With that he has done so that it can open doors by shooting at other objects. So he will continue working on stuff around that, as well as some further mechanics like hacking minigames. Me however have been working on a project in Unity before with creating card object that will have different types (attack, defense, healing, etc.), different values (attack damage, defense amount, etc.) and variables for different status effects and element types of attacks and defenses. This is all inspired from one of my favorite RPG called Baten Kaitos.

This project I’ve been working in comes from my application I turned in to Futuregames, and it is basically a love letter to the game Baten Kaitos that really sold me in on the combat mechanic and the astounding visuals of both the environment and inside of the combat. What makes the combat so unique is that, even though it is turned based combat, everything is depending on the characters deck of cards which you have total control of customizing to however you want to fit your combat style or to adjust it depending on what enemies you’re up against.

So what I’ll be attempting to work on is a very basic version of this type of combat and try to evolve it throughout the process. I will talk to my friend who will act as my mentor about what the project is and what I want to work on, and I hope that he can help me get on the right path by recommending me where to start and how to go from there. Baby steps and all of that!
